Trying Out the City

My second photo shoot EVER featured my gorgeous stepdaughter as a subject. Though she is naturally a beautiful young lady, she often questions her beauty. I knew this would be my most insurmountable challenge. Forget the lighting, the aperture, the correct location - how can I make my stepdaughter see herself as the rest of the world views her? She often doubts the strength, in both beauty and intelligence, she possesses. This is my one wish for her - believe in all that she is. Trust that her independence, her confidence, her intelligence, her strength and her determination will carry her even when she is sizing herself up against the cruel world of young adolescence.

Despite being kicked out of an alley way (the lighting was just too good to pass up!), I relished the time I was able to spend with her. It's tough being a step-mom sometimes. So many toes you might step on, so many feelings you might hurt. I tread so lightly and worry so much. But, in those moments behind the camera I could just enjoy her and all that I hope she becomes. I wish we could bottle that hour and remember it always.
